Polymyxin B Sulfate for Injection
(For Healthcare Professionals Only)
[Indications]:Indications for Polymyxin B (Polymyxin B Sulfate):
This product is indicated for the treatment of severe infections in adult patients caused by carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli, including meningitis and bacteremia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa sensitive strains.
When less toxic drugs are ineffective or contraindicated, it may be used for severe infections caused by the following microorganisms:
Escherichia coli
Klebsiella aerogenes (formerly Enterobacter aerogenes; gas-producing Klebsiella)
Klebsiella pneumoniae
Special Administration:
For the treatment of meningitis, this product should be administered intrathecally (directly into the spinal canal).
To reduce the emergence of resistant bacteria and maintain the efficacy of Polymyxin B and other antibiotics, Polymyxin B should be used only for infections confirmed or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria.
Prior to treatment, appropriate cultures and susceptibility testing should be performed to isolate and identify the causative pathogen and determine its susceptibility to Polymyxin B.
Due to the narrow therapeutic window and individual patient factors, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) of drug concentrations is recommended during treatment.
